Two years ago, we came up with the idea of designing a new line system for double-handed rods. In order to gain further insights into the Scandinavian market and the needs of Scandinavian salmon fishermen, we started out by interviewing a series of Scandinavian fly tackle stores. In doing so, we learned more about how to improve and optimize existing line ranges in the market. Full of input and enthusiasm, we then sat down and designed the first prototypes. During the development and testing phases, we teamed up with some of the most experienced salmon fly fishermen, fly casters, and tackle store representatives in Norway. We’re proud to say that the resulting line- and tip range is the most thoroughly tested and fine-tuned line range we’ve ever designed for Scientific Anglers. The lines and tips perform equally well for the beginner and the expert no matter what modern high-modulus double-hander you might chose to cast.

  • The bellies are designed to be used with a tip (They don’t work properly without)
  • The tapered tips will turn over both the smallest and biggest salmon flies out there. The tips will also improve most other heads (from competing brands) in the market (sold separately)
  • Bellies come in three different variants (floating, intermediate, and S3)
  • Tips range from 9 – 18´ in six different sinking densities (sold separately)
  • Rear-end weight distribution makes the bellies perfect for loading your fly rod, and provides excellent angled casting abilities
  • Orange tracer at the read-end of the belly ensures visual control while casting and fishing
  • No hinging in the transition between belly and tip. Makes for harmonious casting and smooth loops
  • Textured coating, which - compared to traditional lines - makes the lines easier to pull out of the water prior to casting
  • Scientific Anglers line-ID on both bellies and tips, so you can always identify the right line for the right job

Meet the Scientific Anglers Line Identification System. SA•ID is an innovative line-marking system allowing you to identify your lines at a glance. Wonder if a shooting head is 200 grain or a 300? Just look at the SA•ID. The SA•ID can be found on the first 1-2 feet of the tip section of your line.

The Scientific Anglers Shooting Texture features precisely replicated hemispherical divots, similar to those found on a golf ball’s surface. This evolution of our texturing technology has less texture on its surface so it feels like a traditional fly line but performs with the benefits of texturing. The result is a line that lasts longer, floats higher, casts easier, and, most importantly, fishes better.

Exceptionally slick and strong, our Welded Loops produce smoother casts and easier turnover with a seamless fly-line-to-loop transition, making for softer landings and cleaner pickups. The sleek design also maintains buoyancy for improved fly-line flotation and enables quicker connections between fly line and leaders or fly line and backing.

For every one fish eating on top, there are ten feeding beneath it. Our SONAR sinking technology takes flies to where the fish are: beneath the surface. Using proprietary tungsten formulations and unique tapering, the SONAR sinking technology gets flies down, and keeps them there.

The vibrant colour handling section allows you to improve timing. It works as a visual reminder of where the shooting line tapers into the shooting head and it will help you cast more consistently with the overhang you prefer. Also, when picking up line or roll casting, the vibrant colour handling section helps you cast more efficiently.

You think your floating line isn’t floating as well as it used to do, or isn’t as slick as it used to be? The reasons and the ways to fix this are probably pretty simple.

Lines float because they are lighter than water, and because they are hydrophobic; they repel water. For lines to float their best, both of these features need to be working. The density of your line won’t change, it won’t absorb water and become waterlogged and sink, but if it gets dirty it won’t repel the water well and it will float lower in the surface tension and may get pulled under now and then. The key to good flotation is keeping your lines clean so the hydrophobic surface works.

Cleaning with soap and water on a cloth removes most of the dirt, but cleaning pads work even better. Properly cleaned, your lines will float better, cast better and last longer, certainly a good trade-off for a couple of minutes of line maintenance.

To use the cleaning pad, pinch the pad over the line so that the abrasive, non-foam side touches the line. Pull the fly line through the pad under some tension. Repeat this process until some of the fly line color is visible on the pad.

Clean your lines every 2-3 outings, or anytime you think dirt is hindering their performance. The cleaning pads are easy to carry in your vest or tackle bag and can be used anytime, wet or dry.

Note that flyline dressing can be used to reduce friction during competition- or practice casting scenarios, but we don’t recommend it for fishing.
